Rivian R2 SUV Launch: 330-Mile Range Beats Tesla Model Y

Rivian will launch its R2 electric SUV on June 9, with the EPA releasing final ratings just ahead of deliveries. The R2 Performance all-wheel-drive variant achieves 330 miles of range and 105 MPGe combined efficiency, positioning it competitively against Tesla's upcoming Model Y refresh.

Notably, the R2 outperforms the 2026 Tesla Model Y AWD's 306-mile EPA range despite weighing roughly 800 pounds more and featuring a less aerodynamic design. Both vehicles share identical combined MPGe ratings, making the range advantage particularly significant for Rivian's larger, taller SUV.

The trade-off comes with wheel choice: the 20-inch all-terrain wheel configuration drops to 307 miles of range with 99 MPGe. Current R1 owners with existing reservations receive priority delivery timing, while general reservation holders face a two-to-six-week wait after receiving order invitations.

This launch represents Rivian's attempt to expand beyond its niche adventure-vehicle market into mainstream electric SUV competition, directly challenging Tesla with comparable efficiency and superior range in a larger package.
