Ring Smart Lock hand crank works without power

Ring founder Jamie Siminoff thinks smart locks aren't popular because users worry about power loss. That drove him to develop the Ring Smart Lock, which solves the issue with a hand crank. On the front, a wheel for the latch generates enough power to run the lock for 30 seconds after three or four turns. Inside is a small motor and supercapacitor that produce around three volts. This allows full use of the fingerprint reader, keypad, Ring app, or Alexa. It integrates with Amazon's smart home ecosystem.

The focus on worst-case scenarios addresses buyers' fears about losing home access. Siminoff sees other uses, like cabins in remote locations. The built-in battery lasts a full year on a single charge. The company plans launch in early 2027, with a price of $249 in Black, Silver, and Brass finishes. It uses a single-cylinder deadbolt with no additional wiring.

Ring is also launching new cameras, including the Outdoor Cam 4K Plus, Spotlight Cam 4K Plus, Floodlight Cam 4K Plus, and Indoor Cam 4K, all with Retinal 4K. A new Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam 2K turns 360 degrees and tilts 175 degrees, intelligently following motion. All are available for pre-order today with varying prices.
