Reddit Bot Crackdown Prompts Human Verification for Suspicious Accounts

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has outlined a new strategy to combat automated accounts, revealing that some suspicious profiles will now need to verify humanness. This move targets bot-like behavior detected by Reddit's systems, though it stops short of full identity verification. FaceID and passkeys will be the initial on-device verification methods, with alternatives like World ID being explored. Accounts failing verification may face restrictions.

Huffman emphasized the need for solutions where identity doesn't mix with usage data. The company is also labeling legitimate bots with an '[APP]' tag and improving reporting tools for bad bots. Crucially, Reddit isn't cracking down on AI-generated human posts, focusing instead on ensuring a real person is behind the account.

This approach aims to preserve Reddit's anonymity while tackling bot-driven spam that previously crippled platforms like Digg.
