PS5 Price Hikes Hit Again: Pro Now $900, Standard Up $100

Sony has announced another round of price increases for its PlayStation 5 lineup, with the standard PS5 with disc drive jumping to $650 starting April 2. This marks a $100 increase from August's hike, bringing the total price jump to $150 since the console's launch. The Digital Edition is also climbing to $600, while the high-end PS5 Pro will now cost $900 - a $150 increase from its already premium $750 price tag.

Even Sony's handheld PlayStation Portal isn't immune to the increases, with its price rising from $199 to $250. The company cited "continued pressures in the global economic landscape" as justification, slightly softening the language from last year's "challenging economic environment" excuse. In a blog post, Sony acknowledged the impact on consumers but framed the increases as "necessary" to maintain "innovative, high-quality gaming experiences."

This isn't an isolated incident - the entire gaming industry is feeling the squeeze. Microsoft raised Xbox prices twice last year, while Valve has pushed back Steam Machine launch dates. The ongoing RAM crisis has also affected PC hardware pricing, with Framework increasing desktop prices by up to $460. Nintendo recently announced that some physical Switch 2 games will cost more than their digital counterparts, signaling broader cost pressures across the gaming ecosystem.
