Shazam: The Best Alternative to Pixel's Now Playing

Google Pixel phones feature Now Playing, a seamless, on-device song recognition tool that works in the background without draining battery. Unfortunately, Google hasn't extended this functionality to other Android devices, leaving non-Pixel users without a native solution.

However, Shazam offers a powerful alternative via its Auto Shazam feature. While it isn't as seamless as Pixel's on-device processing—it requires data and can impact battery life—it allows you to identify music automatically in the background. You can manage this through the app settings or by adding a tile to your Quick Settings menu.

For users who prefer manual identification, Shazam provides a floating pop-up button or a Quick Settings tile. This is particularly useful on devices like the Motorola Razr, where it can even function via the cover screen. While we wish Google would expand Now Playing to more hardware, Shazam remains a staple for building music libraries on any Android phone.
