Paramount Cancels Big-Budget Avatar RPG Amid Studio Merger

Paramount Games Studio has quietly cancelled its ambitious Avatar role-playing game. The AAA title, originally announced in late 2024, is no longer in production according to senior vice president Shawn Kittelsen. This marks another setback for video game adaptations of the beloved animated series, which has struggled to translate its success to interactive media.

The RPG aimed to be the franchise's most ambitious gaming project to date. Paramount had promised it would be "the biggest video game in franchise history" featuring an entirely new Avatar character in a setting thousands of years before the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender. However, development stalled when Paramount merged its gaming division with Skydance's studios to form Paramount Games Studio.

Kittelsen suggested fans shouldn't completely lose hope, noting that a AAA Avatar game "might come in a different iteration." This leaves the franchise's gaming future uncertain, especially as previous attempts have failed to meet expectations.

Meanwhile, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game continues moving forward. Despite being pushed back to July 23, the 2D fighter has gained traction with character reveals like Azula and Kyoshi. At least fans have one Avatar game arriving this summer, even if it's not the sprawling RPG many wanted.
