Nintendo Kills Mario Kart Tour on Sept 30

On September 30 at 2 AM ET, Nintendo will retire its seven‑year‑old mobile title Mario Kart Tour. The company has decided not to release an offline version, meaning the app will disappear entirely once servers shut down. Service ends on September 29 at 11 PM PT and on September 30 at 8 AM CEST, with a final notice posted July 8 2026.

Nintendo has already stopped selling the in‑game currency “rubies” and cancelled auto‑renewals for the Gold Pass subscription, which offered extra challenges, rewards and a 200cc mode. Existing subscribers keep access to all non‑subscription perks until the closure, while everyone else receives the same benefits for free starting August 5 at 2 AM. The game’s last major updates—new courses, drivers, karts and gliders—ceased in late 2023, leaving textbook maintenance for almost a year.

Although Nintendo has withdrawn the title, it continues to support other mobile IPs such as Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, Fire Emblem Shadows, Pokémon Go and Pikmin Bloom. The decision underscores a shift in Nintendo’s mobile strategy, favoring smaller, photo‑based or evergreen titles over large, subscription‑driven experiences.

Consumers lose a familiar multiplayer racer, but free access to Gold‑Pass content mitigates the blow. For the industry, the move signals a tightening focus on sustainable mobile models that do not rely on high‑frequency updates or subscription revenue.
