Netflix Faces Landmark Ruling Over Illegal Price Hikes in Italy

Netflix has been ordered to refund Italian subscribers €500 and €250 for unlawful price increases from 2017–2024 after a Rome court ruled the hikes lacked contractual justification. The decision mandates refunds for long-term users of its Premium and Standard plans, respectively, and requires the company to lower current prices to pre-hike levels (e.g., €11.99 for Premium). Netflix must notify 90 days’ worth of affected customers via email, mail, or media by April 2025, or face €700 daily fines.

Movimento Consumatori, an Italian consumer group, spearheaded the lawsuit, arguing Netflix violated Italy’s Consumer Code by failing to disclose reasons for price changes in contracts. The court agreed, deeming the increases “unjustified” and “hidden in unclear terms.” While Netflix claims compliance with local law, it has since updated contracts to clarify future hikes, effective April 2025.

The ruling sets a precedent for consumer rights in subscription services, though Netflix plans to appeal. If unresolved, Movimento Consumatori threatens a class-action lawsuit. For now, Italian users may reclaim funds, but globally, Netflix’s strategy of opaque pricing persists.

This case underscores the risks of aggressive monetization tactics without transparency. Subscribers should scrutinize contract clauses, as legal precedents like this could reshape how streaming giants handle pricing worldwide.
