MWC 2026: Oukitel WP63 Rugged Phone Lights Fires

Oukitel's WP63 smartphone debuted at MWC 2026 with a feature that sets it apart from every other device: a built-in electric igniter. The ruggedized phone includes a heating coil hidden behind a protective cover that can start fires, making it useful for emergency response and camping situations where matches are forgotten. The WP63 also packs a massive 20,000mAh battery, a loudspeaker, and a built-in USB-C cable for charging other devices.

During demonstrations, an Oukitel spokesperson successfully lit rolled-up paper using the igniter, which operates through an app-activated heating coil similar to car cigarette lighters from the 1980s. The igniter pops out from the top of the device when activated. While the company claims it cannot be used to light candles, the reasoning behind this limitation remains unclear. The phone's fire-starting capability is designed for practical outdoor use rather than the disastrous battery issues that plagued the Galaxy Note 7.

Priced around $500, the WP63 embraces thickness over the industry trend toward thinner devices, measuring 27mm in profile. This substantial build makes it potentially useful as a defensive tool against wildlife attacks in remote areas. The WP63 represents an unusual approach to smartphone design, prioritizing survival functionality over conventional features, and demonstrates how manufacturers continue to explore unconventional use cases for mobile devices in outdoor and emergency scenarios.
