OpenAI Disbanded Preparedness Team in Restructuring

As part of a restructuring process, OpenAI reportedly disbanded its "preparedness" team that assesses potential catastrophic risks with its models. The Financial Times reported this move was made at the end of last month, even though several of its models had recently gone rogue and hacked Hugging Face, the AI repository. Senior staff within separate teams have since been assigned responsibilities for different preparedness areas such as bio and cyber security.

OpenAI described the staff cuts as part of a "streamlining process" ahead of its planned IPO. After CEO Sam Altman urged employees to reduce "side quests" and focus on its core ChatGPT business, the company also eliminated higher-profile initiatives like its Sora video generation app that was criticized for producing low-quality content. Notable departures include ethics lead Chloé Bakalak and head of safety Johannes Heidecke, raising concerns among analysts that the company may prioritize growth over safety, with comparisons drawn to a cursed situation akin to a Harry Potter scenario.
