Meta's AI Ad Campaign Lacks AI Details

Meta is launching an advertising campaign to promote an optimistic view of artificial intelligence, aiming to counter "AI doomers" and dystopian visions. CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated the company's focus is on empowering individuals and distributing technology's benefits widely. However, the campaign's centerpiece, a one-minute commercial, features minimal actual AI. Instead, it showcases generic footage of people and Meta's apps like Facebook and Instagram, with only brief glimpses of the Muse Spark AI model and the Meta AI interface.

This approach comes despite Meta's recent layoffs, accusations of using AI to justify cuts, lawsuits over AI training data, and a past internal document suggesting permissible "sensual" conversations with minors. The ad's vagueness about AI's practical benefits has drawn criticism, especially given Meta's significant investment in AI development. Chief Marketing Officer Denise Moreno described the campaign as articulating an optimistic vision, but limited comments on her LinkedIn post about it.

The campaign also prominently features Meta's smart glasses, including Kylie Jenner-branded frames, with some POV footage, but again, without clear AI integration. Zuckerberg's enthusiasm for AI echoes his past promotion of the metaverse, a venture that did not achieve widespread adoption.
