Meta closes smart glasses LED loophole

Meta is rolling out a software update for its smart glasses to close a loophole that let users cover the recording LED. The update stops the camera if the light is blocked during capture. This follows a previous update that disabled cameras if the LED was damaged.

The changes come amid backlash over covert recording and harassment. Alex Himel, Meta's VP of AR, said on Threads that the fix ensures the LED reliably alerts bystanders. He noted that only a tiny minority try to bypass protections, and such efforts show the safeguards are working.

Meta continues to develop additional privacy features for the glasses.
