JBL Live 780NC vs 680NC: Over-Ear vs On-Ear ANC Headphones Compared

JBL introduced two new headphones to its Live series, the JBL Live 780NC and 680NC, each with distinct design and audio characteristics. The 780NC offers over-ear comfort and a wider soundstage, while the 680NC’s on-ear design delivers heavier bass. Despite a $100 price gap, both share 80-hour battery life and ANC features, but the 780NC’s hollow audio and higher cost make the 680NC a more compelling choice for most users.

Both models feature 40mm neodymium drivers and adaptive ANC, but the 780NC’s six microphones versus the 680NC’s four yield minimal real-world differences. The 680NC excels in bass-heavy scenarios like *Helldivers 2*, while the 780NC provides clearer vocals. However, neither headphone’s microphone quality is strong, with calls sounding muffled.

The JBL Headphones app allows customization of touch controls and ANC modes, though toggling between ANC and Ambient requires app intervention—a frustrating limitation. Comfort improves with extended use, though the 680NC’s on-ear pressure feels less fatiguing.

While the 780NC blends into a crowded mid-range market, the 680NC fills a niche for on-ear ANC seekers. Competitors like the Sony WH-CH720N offer better value, but the 680NC remains a standout in its category. At full price, both models risk being overpriced, but sales could justify either purchase.
