At CES 2026, startup IXI unveiled working prototypes of autofocusing glasses that aim to replace traditional multifocal lenses. The technology uses infrared eye tracking to detect focus shifts, activating liquid crystal lenses that switch prescriptions instantly. This innovation targets age-related farsightedness (presbyopia), a common issue for those over 45.

Unlike smartglasses with cameras, IXI's system uses low-power LEDs and photodiodes, consuming just 4 milliwatts. The frames weigh only 22 grams and house batteries similar to AirPods, providing all-day power. CEO Niko Eiden explains that the lenses can also correct astigmatism and function as regular glasses if the battery dies.

Beyond vision, the sensors could monitor health metrics like blink rate, attentiveness, and posture. Partnering with Swiss manufacturer Optiswiss, IXI plans a luxury launch through opticians, potentially revolutionizing eyewear by eliminating the need for multiple pairs of glasses.
