Google pushes Gemini AI into more smart home devices

Google is courting hardware makers to embed its Gemini AI in smart home gear. The firm now markets Gemini for Home as a full‑stack AI, merging Google Home APIs with Gemini capabilities. By offering validated reference designs—SOC, sensors, microphones—partners can skip lengthy R&D and push cameras, speakers and other devices to market faster, including voice‑activated lighting and smart thermostats in homes.

Google bundles the reference kit with its Home Premium AI subscription, formerly Nest Aware. The service costs $10 per month for the standard tier and twice that for the advanced tier, unlocking features like Home Brief summaries and simulated‑presence deterrents for families seeking peace of mind. Existing AI Pro subscribers receive standard access automatically, while Ultra users gain the advanced package without extra charge.

The push comes after Google revamped its Home app to foreground Gemini, adding an “Ask Home” button that nudges users toward the AI experience. With reference designs in the hands of OEMs, a wave of Gemini‑powered speakers and cameras is imminent. Consumers uncomfortable with pervasive AI can still fall back on Home Assistant or Apple HomeKit for privacy‑concerned households still.
