BBEdit 16 brings image text search and streaming AI features

Bare Bones released BBEdit 16 for macOS today, packing in-image text search with grep pattern support, streaming AI worksheets, and deeper Shortcuts integration. Users can now search for text inside screenshots and photos directly from the multi-file search interface, while streaming APIs make LLM responses appear as data arrives instead of waiting for full completions.

The Notebooks feature gains built-in indexing for faster filtering, and projects can use separate color schemes. SFTP transfers are up to 100 times faster, emoji handling improved, and the HTML syntax checker now uses the W3C API. Shortcuts integration lets users run text transformations like sorting and pattern-based line deletion without BBEdit visibly running.

Pricing stays at $60 for new users, $30 for BBEdit 15 upgrades, and $40 from older versions. BBEdit 16 is a free upgrade for BBEdit 15 customers who bought on or after November 1, 2025, and the Free Mode trial resets to 30 days.
