Google Adds Continuous Chat to Gemini for Home Assistant

Google is rolling out a "continued conversations" feature for Gemini for Home, letting users have natural back-and-forth discussions without repeating the "Hey Google" wake word every time. The microphone stays active for a few seconds after Gemini responds, with hardware lights pulsing to indicate you can keep talking. Context carries across the conversation, so you won't need to repeat details from earlier in the dialogue.

The feature launches today across all Gemini for Home languages and supported regions. Users must manually enable it in the Google Home app under Settings > "Gemini for Home voice assistant." Google claims Gemini can distinguish between questions directed at it versus background chatter, though voice assistants have historically struggled with accidental activation and raised privacy concerns over the years.

This isn't entirely new territory for Google — a similar continued conversation option existed on the older Google Assistant, though with more limited availability. The company has been positioning Gemini for Home as the replacement for Google Assistant on smart devices since fall, fundamentally changing how users interact with their connected homes.
