"Killing Satoshi," the upcoming Bitcoin biopic starring Casey Affleck and directed by Doug Liman, will reportedly use artificial intelligence to generate locations and modify actors' performances. The film, announced in 2025, extends its connection to technology beyond cryptocurrency subject matter to production methods, according to Variety. Production will occur on a "markerless performative capture stage" with AI-generated environments.

Producers reserve the right to "change, add to, take from, translate, reformat or reprocess" actors' performances using generative AI, though no digital replicas will be created. This approach comes amid ongoing industry tensions, as SAG-AFTRA's 2023 negotiations specifically addressed AI protections for performers. The union secured safeguards against AI replacement in the latest contract.

Equity, the UK actors' union, currently negotiates similar protections concerned about unauthorized reproduction of members' likenesses and voices. The Bitcoin biopic's production methods walk a fine line between technological innovation and ethical boundaries, potentially setting precedents for future film productions. Industry observers will watch how performers' unions respond to this experimental approach.
