Amazon MGM has severed development ties with director Luca Guadagnino on the forthcoming Sam Altman biopic 'Artificial,' starring Andrew Garfield. The move comes months after Amazon announced a $38 billion multi-year partnership with OpenAI that includes a $50 billion investment and customized AI models running on its cloud services.

Originally slated for early 2027 release, the nearly completed film was removed from Amazon's roster despite positive screen test results. The studio confirmed it is helping place the movie with another distributor, noting respect for Guadagnino's work while suggesting the film is better served elsewhere.

The biopic chronicles Altman's brief 2023 ousting and rehiring as OpenAI CEO, featuring an ensemble cast including Monica Barbaro and Elon Musk. Amazon's decade-long relationship with Altman began in 2015 when it became one of OpenAI's first investors, deepening with a major 2025 infrastructure deal.

Early test screenings reportedly showed audiences disliked portrayals of both Altman and Musk. Amazon is now shopping the finished film to other studios while maintaining its expanded AI partnership with OpenAI.
