Australia Targets AI Chatbots with Age Verification Rules

Australia's government is considering requiring app stores to block AI chatbots that lack age verification systems by March 9. Reuters reports that regulators may force platforms like Google and Apple to restrict access to AI services without proper content controls.

A review found only nine of 50 leading text-based AI chat services in Australia had implemented age assurance measures. Eleven services had either implemented blanket content filters or planned to block Australian users entirely, leaving many without public action just days before the deadline. Non-compliance could result in fines up to A$49.5 million ($35 million).

This aggressive approach aligns with Australia's recent sweeping ban on social media for users under 16. The debate over responsibility for protecting children from harmful content continues globally, with US tech giants lobbying to have age verification requirements placed on platforms rather than app store operators.
