Amazon Renames Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+

Amazon is renaming its Kindle Unlimited subscription service to Kindle+, according to an email sent to subscribers. The rebrand comes as the company expands the service's library of audiobooks, which now includes thousands more audiobooks, Amazon says. Subscribers still get access to the same library of books, magazines and comics.

Amazon says existing benefits carry over to the new name. Reading history, bookmarks, notes and saved titles will all move to Kindle+. The service will still cost $12 per month, and users can still borrow up to 20 titles at a time. In practical terms, the audiobook collection is the only meaningful change.

The audiobook expansion includes a new route for authors. Self-published writers who use Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing platform can now include their audiobooks in the service. Authors can upload traditionally produced audiobooks, and Amazon is also testing a service that generates audiobooks narrated by a "virtual voice."

Kindle+ is available now. It works through Amazon's Kindle app and on the company's redesigned lineup of Kindle hardware.
