Chrome Adds Warnings for Suspicious Websites

Google has detailed several updates to Chrome aimed at helping users stay safe while browsing online. The company says it has rolled out alerts for suspicious websites, along with bright red, full-screen warnings for sites that are "known to be dangerous." The updates are part of an improved warning system that appears when Enhanced protection mode is enabled in Chrome's Safe Browsing feature.

Under the new system, a website deemed "suspicious" triggers a pop-up in the address bar saying "this site doesn't seem right," along with a boldly colored button that returns users to Search or the page they came from. Google says suspicious sites typically pose a "risk of user harm" and exhibit deceptive patterns associated with efforts to steal or capture data. If Chrome is "confident" a site is truly dangerous, the entire screen turns red with the words "dangerous site" in the center. Google says these warnings apply to sites that are "known to be malicious" and will appear on both desktop and Android.

Google has also addressed Click Fix, a social engineering technique that tricks users into manually copying and executing malicious commands under the guise of fixing a problem that never existed. Enhanced Protection will now guard against copying and running suspicious commands.

Chrome has also gained Gemini AI capabilities. Beyond summarizing webpages, Gemini can deliver scam warnings when users visit malicious sites, covering scams, spam and unwanted notifications. Users can override these decisions by marking a flagged site as safe if the AI gets it wrong.
