WhatsApp for iPad Now Standalone

WhatsApp for iPad can now be set up as a standalone application, eliminating the previous requirement to configure an account on a phone first. This significant update, part of a broader WhatsApp rollout by Meta, also enhances CarPlay support and introduces basic PDF annotation tools.

Previously, the iPad app necessitated using WhatsApp's linked-device system, demanding initial setup on a separate phone. The new process allows users to register, complete setup, and actively use WhatsApp directly from their iPad. While Meta has not detailed if a phone number for verification is still needed or if the iPad can be the sole primary device, this change offers a more conventional signup experience.

In addition to the iPad improvements, WhatsApp is refreshing its CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces, expanding in-car functionality to include calling, call history, and quick access to contacts. The update also allows users to open and annotate PDFs within chats and share music from Apple Music and Spotify to their WhatsApp Status. These features began rolling out on July 22, with a staggered release schedule.
