US Lawmakers Demand UK Briefing on iCloud Encryption Backdoor

Two senior U.S. lawmakers have requested a briefing from the UK government regarding its plans to access iCloud user data through an encryption backdoor. House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan and Foreign Affairs Chair Brian Mast sent a letter to British officials, expressing concerns that such a backdoor could expose user data to authoritarian governments and cybercriminals. The lawmakers emphasized the need for public awareness and debate on the technical capability notice (TCN) issued to Apple.

This latest development follows years of tension between Apple and government agencies over encryption. Apple previously fought against similar demands from the FBI in the United States and has consistently maintained its commitment to user privacy. The UK's initial demand in January 2025 prompted bipartisan anger among U.S. lawmakers, with Apple ultimately disabling Advanced Data Protection in the UK rather than comply with the backdoor request.

The ongoing saga highlights the global struggle between tech companies' privacy commitments and government surveillance demands. While the UK appears to have dropped its broader demands for worldwide iCloud access, it continues pursuing access to British citizens' encrypted cloud backups. The March 11 briefing deadline set by U.S. lawmakers underscores the international implications of this encryption debate and the growing scrutiny of government backdoor initiatives.
