Canadian artist Heather Cline experienced a surprising event when her iPhone 17 Pro slipped from her grasp at 3,600 feet during a flight over Regina. The phone, secured only by a lanyard-style case around her neck, was lost when an airstream pulled it from her grip.

Utilizing the Find My app, Cline and her husband, David, were able to locate the device after landing. To their astonishment, the iPhone was found largely intact, resting face-up in a canola field. This remarkable survival is attributed to aerodynamic principles. Objects like smartphones tend to stabilize and fall flat, significantly reducing their speed and impact force.

Unlike short falls where edge or corner impacts are common and devastating, longer freefalls allow the phone to orient itself flatter. Furthermore, landing on softer surfaces like grass or dirt cushions the impact by extending the stopping time, thus lowering the peak force. These factors, combined with the phone's inherent engineering, explain why an iPhone can survive such a dramatic fall.
