PC RAM SSD Price Hikes Force 40% Retail Increases

The PC industry is facing massive price increases for RAM and SSD components, with retail prices expected to jump more than 40% in the coming months. Memory and storage chips now account for over 30% of a typical notebook's bill of materials, up from 15% previously, according to TrendForce analysts.

This surge stems from both increased demand and CPU shortages that are squeezing manufacturers' margins. While most PC makers will pass these costs to consumers, Apple remains largely insulated due to its massive purchasing power and long-term supply chain agreements. The company's MacBook lines won't see the same dramatic price hikes affecting Windows laptops.

Apple's size gives it negotiating leverage that smaller manufacturers lack, allowing it to lock in component costs through multi-year contracts. However, the tech giant isn't completely immune - Apple recently had to renegotiate NAND terms with Kioxia every six months instead of every few years, and Samsung is now charging double for DRAM chips. While Apple's supply chain insulation provides temporary protection, industry analysts suggest this advantage may erode as component costs continue rising across the board.
