Mario Kart Tour Shuts Down in September

Nintendo will cease online services for "Mario Kart Tour" on September 29, 2026, marking a significant shift in the company's mobile gaming strategy. The game, which launched in September 2019 on iOS and Android, will remain playable until that date. Nintendo has updated its support policies regarding in-game currency "rubies" and "Gold Pass" subscriptions, which took effect July 7.

Launched as Nintendo's most ambitious mobile title, "Mario Kart Tour" adapted the beloved console franchise for smartphones with touchscreen controls, seasonal events, and a gacha-style monetization system. However, this mobile-first approach, including automatic steering and portrait-only gameplay, diverged significantly from the console experience players expected and drew criticism. Development on new content ceased in 2023, with the game shifting to rotating existing assets.

The shutdown signals Nintendo's continued retreat from third-party mobile platforms, a strategy that has yielded less success than its dedicated hardware. While titles like "Fire Emblem Heroes" remain active, Nintendo increasingly focuses development on its own controlled ecosystems, exemplified by the success of the Nintendo Switch. "Mario Kart Tour's" closure closes a chapter on Nintendo's efforts to replicate its console dominance in the mobile space.
