Mac supply constraints extend beyond memory chips

Apple is facing persistent Mac supply constraints driven by more than just RAM and SSD shortages, with TSMC's 3nm processor chips remaining in limited supply. During the latest earnings call, Tim Cook warned that memory shortages will become an increasing problem, potentially driving up iPhone and Mac prices as demand from AI firms consumes available components.

According to Digitimes, Mac supplies will stay constrained until TSMC ramps up 2nm manufacturing capacity. Apple's forthcoming OLED MacBook Pro, now delayed until 2027, is expected to use these next-generation processors, which may improve the situation for that specific model while other Mac lines continue to face limitations.

The company has reportedly lost its position as TSMC's largest customer to Nvidia, which is sourcing AI data center processors. Cook specifically mentioned that the Mac mini and Mac Studio may take several months to reach supply-demand balance, with Apple evaluating options that potentially include having Intel manufacture some older processors to address ongoing supply challenges.
