iPhone Fold hinges on 3D printing while iPhone 18 gets new colors

Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone may feature a revolutionary 3D-printed hinge using "chip-level polymer printing technology," according to recent leaks. This contradicts earlier rumors suggesting Liquid Metal would be used for the component. The foldable device, expected in late 2026, represents Apple's first venture into the iPhone Fold market, with significant engineering reportedly invested in the hinge design.

In contrast, iPhone 18 upgrades appear minimal, with sources suggesting Apple will focus mainly on new color options rather than substantial design changes. Reports indicate the iPhone 18 Pro may get a dark red option, while purple and coffee-type colors were tested. This conservative approach follows previous models that maintained similar designs with minor refreshes and performance improvements.

The leak comes from Fixed Focus Digital, whose mixed track record includes correctly predicting the iPhone 16e name but incorrectly forecasting its failure. Apple already uses 3D printing for select components like Apple Watch cases and titanium USB-C ports in the iPhone Air. The 3D printing technology seems increasingly important to Apple's manufacturing strategy, potentially setting the stage for more ambitious foldable designs compared to the incremental changes expected for the standard iPhone 18 lineup.
