iPhone 18 Pro Max Rumored for Variable Aperture

A reputable leaker known as Ice Universe has claimed that variable aperture technology will be exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, rather than being included in both Pro models as previously anticipated. Variable aperture allows for better control of depth of field and low-light performance, narrowing the gap between smartphone and DSLR photography. The feature has been rumored since 2024, with recent reports suggesting the camera component is already in production.

The reason for the exclusivity, according to the leaker, is the physical size requirement of the variable aperture mechanism. Unlike fixed aperture systems used in all iPhones to date, variable aperture requires additional internal space to adjust the light opening. This spatial constraint may explain why Apple is limiting the feature to the larger Pro Max model.

This strategy mirrors Apple's approach with the iPhone 15 Pro Max in 2023, which was the first to feature the tetraprism camera system with 5x optical zoom. The standard Pro model received this feature a year later with the iPhone 16 Pro. Apple may follow a similar rollout pattern for variable aperture, initially launching it on the Pro Max before potentially expanding to other models in future generations.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is also rumored to be larger than its predecessor to accommodate a bigger battery, which could provide additional space for the variable aperture mechanism. Ice Universe has a strong track record for accurate leaks, particularly regarding iPhone dimensions and camera specifications.
