G-Raid Project 2 Review: Enterprise Storage at a Premium

Western Digital's 52TB G-Raid Project 2 delivers massive capacity and Thunderbolt 3 speeds for serious data warehousing, but the $1,999.99 price tag puts it firmly in enterprise territory. The two-bay DAS enclosure combines 7,200RPM Ultra Enterprise-class hard drives with optional Pro Blade SSD expansion, offering sequential read speeds up to 520MB/s for the HDDs and over 900MB/s when paired with an SSD.

Despite its enterprise focus, the Project 2's design is surprisingly compact at 5.24 x 8.27 x 4.06 inches, though the external power brick limits portability. The unit ships with RAID 0 enabled via DIP switches, supporting RAID 1 and JBOD configurations as well. While Thunderbolt 3 connectivity avoids the bottlenecks common in USB-C-only drives, the SSD slot's 3GB/s potential feels underutilized at current speeds.

For creative professionals drowning in data, the G-Raid Project 2 offers reliability and support that DIY solutions can't match. But with comparable two-bay enclosures and enterprise drives costing around $1,500 to build yourself, the premium buys peace of mind rather than performance. This isn't a consumer product—it's for businesses where data loss costs more than the hardware.
