Character Limit Steam Launch Diary – Crunch & Release

The Steam launch of Character Limit looms after a final push to get the game ready. Although it is playable, the actual release remains problematic. The full build sits on Steam, awaiting launch.

Developing this word game was never intended to take a year; the series began on July 28, 2025. After a year of spare‑time work, the author’s partner set an initial release date of July 20, later moved to July 21 to allow for Steam’s review. Steam requires a finished build submission, which can take about five business days, and locks the disclosed release date 14 days prior, leaving little margin for resubmission if issues arise.

During the crunch week the developer added final features, trimmed others for later updates, and implemented Daily Play mode, social‑share button, Steam achievements, leaderboards, and Cloud saves. A mistaken checkbox enabling developer‑only Cloud saves caused Steam to reject the build, forcing a resubmission and another five‑day wait.

To avoid extra strain, the focus stays on Steam first, with iOS and iPad OS delayed. Post‑launch priority is maintaining the Steam version and fixing the Steam version; iOS will follow after testing, possibly in good shape and fixing any breaks; iOS will follow after testing, possibly in August, ideally without another crunch.
