Indie word game lands trophy after TestFlight and DreamHack demo

Indie developer Emma and her team pushed the word puzzle “Character Limit” from a polished internal build to public testing this spring. After hitting a solid milestone in early February, they turned to Apple’s TestFlight to distribute iOS builds across a range of devices and gather unfiltered player feedback. Early internal trials exposed a language‑switch crash and font size complaints that would have been missed in developer‑only playtests.

Setting up TestFlight required creating both internal and external testing groups. The developer acted as the sole internal tester, while a limited external link was shared on Discord, capping participants at twenty. Only five installs occurred, sparing the team from a flood of harsh critiques and allowing them to patch the crash before wider exposure.

A last‑minute opening at the Indie Playground of DreamHack Birmingham let the studio showcase a trimmed demo to festival crowds. Despite cobbled‑together hardware and a rushed five‑minute version, attendees queued at the booth and the game earned third‑place People’s Choice honors, complete with a trophy. The unexpected buzz validates the developers’ effort and gives a tangible credential before the official launch.
