Onyx's Boox Tab X C attempts to bridge three device categories—eReader, notebook, and laptop—into one color ePaper tablet. The 13.3-inch display renders black-and-white text at 300 PPI and supports 4,096 colors at 150 PPI, making it suitable for comics, textbooks, and academic PDFs. At under $1,000, this screen size is remarkable for ePaper technology, which typically maxes out at six to seven inches for cost reasons.

But the large display creates usability problems. Weighing 625 grams without the keyboard, the Tab X C feels more like a clipboard than a book during extended reading sessions. The optional keyboard case suffers from poor magnetic attachment and an overly sensitive touchpad that causes frequent misclicks. Removing and repositioning the tablet within the case just to use it as a cover feels unnecessarily complicated.

The included InkSpire stylus shines, offering precise note-taking and PDF annotation capabilities. Powered by an octa-core processor with 6GB RAM, performance stays adequate rather than impressive, with noticeable ghosting on image-heavy sites. The dual refresh modes—A2 for scrolling and HD for reading—help manage these limitations.

Despite its innovative screen, the Tab X C struggles to excel at any single task. The keyboard's touchpad issues and the device's unwieldy size for reading make it hard to recommend over dedicated alternatives, even though the color ePaper technology itself represents genuine progress.
