Apple's flagship foldable, the iPhone Duo, went on sale Friday, and as is tradition, the Apple CEO was there to kick off sales. Crowds gathered outside Apple Stores worldwide as the device became available to buyers.

This year, the honor did not go to Tim Cook, and the event was not held in New York City. Instead, John Ternus, who took over as Apple CEO in September, opened the doors at 9:00 a.m. local time at the Apple Domain Northside store in Austin, Texas. The store first opened in November 2017.

He was joined by Senior Vice President of Retail Deirdre O'Brien. Normally, the CEO opens the Fifth Avenue location in New York. That store was instead opened by Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak and Vice President of Stores and Retail Operations Vanessa Trigub, while Ternus was not present there. Apple opened preorders for the iPhone Duo on October 16, and the device began reaching customers on Friday, October 23.
