Apple Vision Pro Strategy Overhauled Under New CEO John Ternus

Apple is dramatically scaling back its head-mounted hardware ambitions under incoming CEO John Ternus, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The company has killed off Vision Air and Display glasses projects, leaving only two smart glasses products in development. This represents a significant pivot from Apple's original vision of dominating the mixed reality market.

The Vision Air cancellation came in October 2025, with Display glasses axed in January 2025. Kuo notes the roadmap he predicted a year ago is now obsolete, with Apple's headset category effectively 'on ice.' Remaining projects include AI glasses targeting late 2027 and full AR Apple Glass slated for the decade's end. The move suggests Apple sees greater mass-market potential in smart glasses rather than premium headsets.

Price played a major role in this strategic shift. At $3,499, the Vision Pro struggled to find buyers without compelling applications. After two years on market, it still lacks a killer app, creating a catch-22: developers won't invest without sales, but consumers won't buy without apps. This reality forced Apple's hand.

Alternative wearables like camera-equipped AirPods Pro and AI pins may fulfill similar functions without the headset form factor. While Vision Pro development hasn't completely halted, the April reorganization that absorbed its dedicated team signals Apple's focus is shifting. WWDC may reveal more about this redirected strategy, but current signs point to a diminished future for Apple's mixed reality headset ambitions.
