Apple is now offering free 4K resolution upgrades for select TV show purchases on the Apple TV app, mirroring a policy previously exclusive to movies. This change, identified by researcher Sigmund Judge, automatically upgrades eligible series to 4K without additional cost to consumers.

The initial wave includes nearly 50 TV series across various genres, with "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" being one confirmed title now displaying a 4K badge. While these upgrades currently appear in standard dynamic range, not HDR or Dolby Vision, this move finally extends a significant customer perk to television content.

This policy mirrors Apple's movie upgrade strategy, where HD purchases were automatically updated to 4K when available. Previously, TV show buyers had to repurchase series to access higher resolutions. The expansion of this program to TV shows strengthens Apple's digital storefront, though the selection criteria and future rollout plans remain unclear.
