Apple patents modular upgrades for Vision Pro headset

Apple’s USPTO filing reveals a Apple Vision Pro designed for modular upgrades. The 28‑page patent, titled “Head‑mountable device with connectable accessories,” sketches a headset whose battery, frame and display can be swapped out by the user. Inventors Darshan R. Kasar and Paul X. Wang argue the core unit need’t house every function permanently.

Users could trade weight for endurance, opting for a smaller battery when they prefer a lighter frame, or keep a larger pack for marathon sessions. The patent also envisions third‑party sensors—thermal cameras, ophthalmic scanners, or industrial probes—plugging into the same high‑bandwidth connector used by the Developer Strap. Such add‑ons would expand the headset’s utility beyond consumer entertainment.

Apple has not yet announced a Made‑for‑Vision‑Pro program, so early accessories would likely come from its own labs, mirroring the iPad’s Smart Connector line. If the company eventually opens the platform, a thriving third‑party market could drive adoption in fields like medicine and manufacturing. As written, the patent signals a significantly shift toward a customizable, future purpose‑specific headset.
