Apple M4 Leads Mac Gaming on Steam

Valve’s latest hardware survey shows almost one‑fifth of Mac users on Steam play Apple’s M4 chip. In the December 2025 snapshot, 19.6 % of Macs playing Steam games were powered by the M4, edging out the older M1 at 18.1 %. The M4 debuted in the iPad Pro in May 2024 and quickly spread to the 24‑inch iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Air and most MacBook Pro models, giving it a breadth that the newer M5 cannot match.

Apple introduced the M5 in the 14‑inch MacBook Pro in October 2025, touting up to 45 % faster graphics, yet only about 1 % of Steam gamers reported using it. The survey also revealed a preference for 16 GB RAM configurations and a sizable share of users on macOS Tahoe. Apple’s push to make the Mac a viable gaming platform has long lagged behind Windows, but the M4’s strong showing suggests that when performance and price align, Mac gamers will adopt Apple Silicon.

Future surveys will reveal whether broader M5 rollout can shift the balance.
