Apple Fitness+ Launches in Japan with AI Dubbing

Apple Fitness+ has finally launched in Japan, but the rollout uses AI-generated voice dubs instead of hiring local trainers. Existing workouts feature digitally translated audio trained on the original instructors' voices. This marks the service's 49th country, following a slow global expansion since its 2020 debut.

The approach mirrors Apple's controversial 2023 move to use AI voices in Apple Books. While users can switch between Japanese and English audio, critics argue the tech giant could have filmed new sessions with Japanese-speaking trainers or US-based bilingual instructors. The decision feels like a cost-cutting shortcut for a company with vast resources.

Japan-specific content includes Artist Spotlight sessions featuring J-Pop duo YOASOBI and a 'Time to Walk' episode with comedian Naomi Watanabe. Apple's VP of Fitness Technologies, Jay Blahnik, touted seamless integration with iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. The service costs $9.99/month and is bundled with Apple One Premier.
