Sony Xperia 1 VIII users in Europe are beginning to receive the Android 17 update, just months after the device launched with Android 16. The update, identified as version 73.1.A.2.61, is rolling out as a 1.2GB over-the-air download and is expected to reach more regions soon.

According to Sony's official changelog, the update introduces Android 17's new Desktop mode and enhances the "Wallpaper & style" feature with fresh wallpapers, new clock designs, and expanded icon customization options. The Quick Settings panel has also been revamped with a cleaner look, allowing users to resize and rearrange tiles freely.

Additional improvements include an upgraded screen recording function that supports full-screen or app-specific capture, along with simultaneous device and microphone audio recording. The AI Camera Assistant in Photo mode now lets users register up to three custom looks and switch between them quickly. As always, the update also includes bug fixes and performance enhancements.

The Xperia 1 VIII remains Sony's latest flagship smartphone, priced at €1,499 for the 256GB model with 12GB RAM.
