Apple Elevates RAW Photography with iOS 27 Update

Apple pushes RAW imaging forward with a new Core Image RAW v9 built into iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate. Developers receive machine‑learning‑driven denoising, color correction, and detail enhancement that will surface in third‑party camera and editing apps. The update skips the consumer Photos app, targeting creators.

During a 16‑minute WWDC briefing, Core Image Engineer David Hayward showcased images that struggled under the old RAW 8 pipeline—high‑noise scenes and low‑contrast shots. The new model, run on device via Apple’s neural‑engine cores, restores detail and sharpness, delivering colors that appear more accurate and well‑defined.

Apple’s previous major RAW update dates back to 2017, when RAW 8 debuted. By contrast, RAW 9 introduces a machine‑learning backbone that processes sensor data locally, avoiding cloud latency and preserving privacy. Photographers who rely on apps like Halide or Pixelmator Pro will notice crisper images and more faithful color reproduction.

For consumers, the change means that future camera apps can offer higher‑quality RAW captures without waiting for software updates. Developers will need to integrate the new Core Image RAW v9 API, but the payoff is a clearer, more vibrant photo experience across Apple devices.
