Apple introduced the AirPods Max 2 on March 16, upgrading its premium headphones with the H2 chip, improved active noise cancellation (ANC), and Live Translation. The new model retains the original’s design but adds internal upgrades, including 1.5x more effective ANC and a digital signal processing algorithm for natural Transparency sound. The H2 chip also enables features like Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Spatial Audio with 24-bit 48kHz lossless audio via USB-C.

The AirPods Max 2 weighs 13.6 ounces, matching the original, but now includes nine microphones (eight for ANC, three for voice pickup) and Camera Remote functionality via the Digital Crown. Battery life remains 20 hours with ANC enabled. Apple began accepting orders March 25, priced at $549, with shipments expected in early April.

This update addresses long-standing gaps in the original AirPods Max, which only received a minor 2024 refresh. By integrating the H2 chip, Apple prioritizes real-time translation and adaptive noise control, positioning the Max 2 as a competitive premium audio option. The inclusion of USB-C and Bluetooth 5.3 ensures compatibility with modern devices, while Camera Remote adds utility for iOS users.

Priced at $549, the AirPods Max 2 targets audiophiles and professionals seeking advanced features. Its release underscores Apple’s focus on hardware-software integration, leveraging the H2 chip to deliver innovations absent in earlier models. Critics may question whether incremental upgrades justify the cost, but the Live Translation and enhanced ANC could redefine expectations for over-ear headphones.
