Xreal Project Aura Merges VR Power Into Smart Glasses for Android XR

Xreal unveiled Project Aura at Google I/O 2026, packing VR capabilities into a smart glasses form factor. The device features dual displays, built-in speakers, and cameras for spatial tracking, powered by an upgraded X1S chip that improves speed and multitasking over previous models.

Project Aura differs fundamentally from existing smart glasses like Xreal One, which function as external monitors. Instead, it operates independently with full Android XR support, including spatial tracking and hand recognition. A companion compute puck handles processing, evolving from the 2024 Xreal Beam Pro design with dual USB-C ports.

The glasses offer a 70-degree field of view, about 15 degrees wider than current smart glasses but narrower than traditional VR headsets like Meta Quest 3. This positions Project Aura well for mixed-reality applications that blend virtual elements with real-world environments rather than immersive gaming.

Xreal plans to ship the first 1,000 developer kits free this year, with commercial availability expected later in 2026. Pricing should align with or slightly exceed the recently announced Xreal ROG R1 glasses, though final details remain unconfirmed.
