T-Mobile Launches Network-Native AI Live Translation Beta for Calls

T-Mobile has released its network-native AI Live Translation beta to customers, marking a significant step toward intelligent network services. The feature works directly through the carrier's 5G infrastructure without requiring additional app downloads. Customers simply dial *87* during a call to activate real-time translation across over 80 languages. This eliminates language barriers between callers regardless of their device type.

The technology leverages T-Mobile's telco edge and distributed cloud infrastructure to process translations natively within the network. CTO John Saw described it as an early example of network-native AI, enabling compatibility from modern smartphones to classic flip phones. Only one participant needs to be on T-Mobile's network for the service to function, making it broadly accessible.

This launch follows T-Mobile's February announcement about moving toward native AI experiences on its network. CEO Srini Gopalan emphasized that communication barriers represent some of the simplest yet most significant challenges for wireless customers. The company envisions expanding these capabilities throughout the year based on consumer feedback.

The feature addresses practical needs for families separated by language differences, particularly those speaking Spanish, Portuguese, or Korean. By embedding translation directly into the network layer rather than relying on device-specific applications, T-Mobile is redefining what cellular networks can accomplish beyond basic connectivity.
