T-Mobile Axes 2G Network in August 2026

T-Mobile is finally retiring its 2G GSM network on August 3, 2026, marking the end of an era for older devices. The carrier has kept this legacy network operational longer than many expected, aiming to avoid leaving customers stranded. However, users still relying on 2G will soon face limitations or a complete loss of service.

Devices still connected to the 2G network will lose access to features like caller ID, call forwarding, and call waiting. For Android users, sending multimedia messages, such as photos and videos, will also become impossible. T-Mobile's chief network officer cited a desire not to leave customers in the lurch, especially those entering the US with devices lacking Vo LTE.

While T-Mobile shut down its 3G network in 2022, the 2G shutdown has been a much longer process. This move is a necessary step for network modernization, freeing up spectrum and resources for newer technologies like 5G. Customers have been notified and have ample time to upgrade to newer, more capable devices before the August deadline.
