Automakers embraced connected cars for benefits like over-the-air (OTA) software updates, which bypass costly dealer repairs and allow for continuous product improvements. However, as cellular providers phase out older technologies, such as the 3G network shutdown in 2022, vehicles relying on them lose connectivity. Automakers also eventually stop investing in aging systems.

Examples include Lexus Enform on 2010–2017 models losing functionality, Acura Link support ending for 2014–2022 models, and BMW Connected Drive services terminating for 3G-equipped vehicles. While the loss of these features is an inconvenience rather than a mechanical failure, potential solutions include software/OTA updates, hardware replacements, or aftermarket devices.
