Spotify's Taste Profile Beta Gives Users Control Over Music Discovery

Spotify is testing a new Taste Profile feature that lets users see and control how the platform interprets their musical preferences. The beta, currently rolling out to Premium users in New Zealand, provides a breakdown of recent artists and genres while offering a text box where users can request more of certain styles or less of others. This direct feedback mechanism aims to give listeners more influence over their personalized recommendations.

According to Spotify's announcement, Taste Profile is designed to capture new dimensions of user taste, including current interests and listening habits. The feature shows users what the platform thinks they like through a "recent taste" breakdown, then allows them to fine-tune these preferences. Users can tell Spotify to prioritize specific genres like metalcore or K-Pop group Itzy, or exclude artists and styles they've only sampled once but don't want dominating their recommendations.

The beta represents Spotify's latest push toward transparency and personalization in music discovery. Recent updates like Prompted Playlists in the US and Canada let users describe the type of music they want to hear, while offline lyrics and song background features have expanded the platform's functionality. By giving users direct input into their Taste Profile, Spotify aims to make the homepage experience more relevant and reduce unwanted recommendations that come from occasional listening.
