Sony WF-1000XM6 vs WF-1000XM5: Key Upgrades and Worth

Sony's new WF-1000XM6 earbuds bring significant changes compared to the WF-1000XM5, with a redesigned case, smaller earbuds, and upgraded internal hardware. The $330 price tag makes them Sony's most expensive true wireless earbuds yet, surpassing even the AirPods Pro 3 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Gen 2. While the cost is steep, Sony has overhauled nearly every aspect of the earbuds.

Visually, the WF-1000XM6 features a cylindrical oval case with flat surfaces and rounded sides, making it slightly taller than its predecessor. The earbuds themselves sport a smaller, pill-shaped design that's 11% smaller than the WF-1000XM5 chassis. This redesign addresses comfort issues from the previous model, with better fit in the ear canals and improved security during use. Battery life remains consistent at eight hours with ANC active, extending to 24 hours with the charging case.

The internal upgrades are equally impressive. The WF-1000XM6 adds an extra microphone per earbud for enhanced noise cancellation, claiming 25% better ambient noise blocking. The new QN3e chip with Integrated Processor V2 improves ANC, call quality, and sound performance. Redesigned audio drivers with different dome and edge materials deliver excellent soundstage separation. The earbuds now support a 10-band EQ (up from five), LDAC for hi-res audio, and Bluetooth Low Energy for more reliable connections.
