Meta pushes AI glasses amid VR slowdown

Meta has evolved from a pure social platform into a tech heavyweight that merges social networking, AI and mixed reality. Its portfolio now includes Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook and the Quest line of VR headsets. Although the company’s VR ambitions have softened, it remains a top contender in the headset market.

Behind those products sits Meta AI, built on the company’s own Llama family of large language models. By leveraging Llama, Meta can offer on‑device intelligence that rivals Google’s Gemini effort. The firm has turned that capability into consumer hardware, teaming with eyewear brands Ray‑Ban and Oakley to launch AI‑powered glasses that interpret visual input and deliver contextual replies during everyday activities or workouts.

These glasses illustrate Meta’s strategy to embed AI in daily wearables, blurring the line between virtual augmentation and the physical world. By capitalizing on its Llama engine and existing social ecosystem, the company hopes to capture users beyond the headset niche and reassert relevance in a crowded AR market.

While Meta’s AI glasses are still early in the product cycle, their rollout signals a shift toward ubiquitous AI assistance. Consumers may soon rely on instant visual analysis for navigation, fitness tracking, or real‑time translation, challenging rivals like Apple and Google to accelerate their own wearable AI programs.
